Rachel might hate me for mentioning this, but she recently turned 40 and enjoyed a surprise trip to Paris with her husband Gareth and daughter Erin. Gareth managed to keep the destination secret until the very last minute. For weeks, Rachel, Jo, and I had been speculating about possible destinations – by the time the trip arrived, I was relieved that Gareth had chosen the ‘City of Love’ (after all, I feared a trip to Blackpool might have been a bit disappointing!).
Ironically, as I was writing this, I learned that Paris is actually known as the ‘City of Light,’ not the ‘City of Love’ as many believe – a nickname it earned as the first European city to illuminate its streets with gas lighting in the 19th century. Rachel’s highlights included Sacré-Coeur, the Palais Garnier, and a Seine River cruise.
